GOSHEN — Soccer is a game usually played with eleven on a side. Especially at the high school level, that's almost a minimum: I don't think I've seen a team win using fewer than 13 players at some point. So when I heard that the Bruins would only be able to dress ten players Tuesday night, I was not especially optimistic.
Color me pleasantly surprised.
To be clear, the chain of events that led to a ten-player lineup did not end in a win. But it ended in a one-goal game, which meant that for more than 41 minutes Bethany was one stroke of luck from a tie. Several times that stroke almost came when forwards Laken Richer and Mia Graber Miller broke free of the West Noble midfield, but since West Noble had an extra player on the field compared to Bethany, they were invariably met by a defender or two just in front of the penalty area. The Bruins managed only two shots on goal; one went in.
On the other end of the field, it would have been easy to understate the importance of the defense anchored by goalkeeper Natalie Thorne and sweeper Sammy Kauffman. While it's true that Bethany surrendered more goals than it scored, one of the two tallies was deflected and the other crept between Thorne's hands and the crossbar. Natalie stands 6'1", the bar is eight feet from the ground, and a regulation ball is about nine inches in diameter.
In other words, this game was closer than a ten-player lineup would suggest.
Luck is the combination of preparation and opportunity. Especially when we can actually substitute, Bethany will be prepared for many opponents. The opportunity will come at some point.

Richardson New Girls Soccer Coach

Sam Richardson, a former Bruin player and assistant coach, is taking over as head girls soccer coach. He replaces Thavisith Mounsithiraj, who resigned to prepare for the adoption of two boys from Ethiopia this fall.
Richardson served as Mounsithiraj’s assistant last year and previously assisted on Bethany’s boys soccer team in 1998 and the Goshen College women's team in 2001. Since 2009, Richardson has coached U15, U16 and U17 teams for the Elkhart County United club.
Richardson takes over a young team with little depth: the Bruins return just five players from last year’s 8-8-1 team and have only 12 players. However, Richardson looks forward to rebuilding the girls soccer program, saying “I am excited about the opportunity to be the head coach for the girls this year. It has been a goal for me to be a head soccer coach at Bethany. [That] has happened a little sooner than planned. I'm ready for the challenges this season will bring with a young squad.”
As a player at Bethany, Richardson finished with 45 goals and 28 assists, which places him fifth and seventh on those lists in the school record book. As a four-year starter at Goshen College, Richardson was an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention in 1999. He led the team in scoring for three seasons (1998, 1999 and 2000) and was named to an All-Mid-Central Conference team in all three of those seasons.
The Bruins open an abbreviated 2012 schedule on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Elkhart Memorial. Richardson's first home game will be against West Noble three days later.

INDIANAPOLIS — In a soccer game, using twelve players and a coach will result in someone getting a yellow card. In an award announcement, however, having twelve players plus a coach results in a press release. The latter is the camp in which Bethany finds itself after today's announcement of all-district and academic all-state awards by the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association.
Senior goalkeeper Jeff Yoder and senior midfielder Femi Hollinger-Janzen were named first-team all-District 1 players by the coaches association. District 1 stretches from Elkhart County west to the Illinois state line, going as far south as Oregon-Davis and LaVille. As first-team selections, Hollinger-Janzen and Yoder will represent the district in the ISCA college showcase on Nov. 19 and 20 at Indianapolis North Central High School.
The two players will be joined on the district 1 team by their head coach once again, as boys soccer coach Hank Willems was named District 1 private-school coach of the year and will coach the district team in that showcase. In a statement released by the school, Willems touted the Bruin selections as representatives of the team, saying "Having players selected from both the offense and defense represents the many quality players we have on both sides of the ball. Defensive players are often overlooked, so to have a goalkeeper selected is an acknowledgement of our entire defensive unit."
As members of the district's first and second teams, Yoder and Hollinger-Janzen will be eligible for all-state consideration; in addition, by virtue of his coach-of-the-year award, Willems will appear on the ballot for the state coach of the year award. Those awards will be announced at the ISCA awards banquet on the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 20 in Indianapolis.
A total of ten Bruins were also announced as recipients of the ISCA All-Academic Award, given to players who are varsity contributors and have grade-point averages above 3.6 through three years or 3.7 through two. Recipients from the boys team include seniors Yoder and Jared Nussbaum along with juniors Lucas Morgan and Andrew Snyder.
