As the Bruins get set to take on the Triton Trojans, defending state champions and #1 team in class 1A, I'll offer up these tidbits regarding the Bruins, #1 teams, polls, and Triton:
- This will be the third time that the Bruins have played a #1-ranked team, the second time that Bethany has hosted said team, and the first time that team is the Class 1A front-runner.
- Bethany fell at 2A #1 Westview 81-59 on Nov. 23, 1999, and 54-34 against identically-ranked Jimtown in the Menno Lands on Feb. 17, 2005.
- Bethany lost 81-70 to Class 1A #2 Rossville on March 16, 2002 at Huntington North HS. This was the second of the two semistate games Bethany has played in.
- The Bruins have not reached the AP top 10 (or honorable mention) since Jan. 29, 2007 when they were honorably mentioned. Bethany, led by 2007 alumni Seth Grimes (21 points) and David Plaster (15), defeated 2-13 ECA in overtime 54-51 that Friday and were not in the Feb. 5 poll.
- The Bruin varsity roster for that game included then-sophomores Jordan Weaver, Mark DeLeeuw, Luke Slagel, Tim Gautsche, and Johnny Kauffman. Weaver started and DeLeeuw scored five points.
- Triton won the 2008 1A state championship 50-42 over Lutheran, paced by 16 points from Jake Everett and 14 from Troy McIntyre. Both of these players graduated.
- Oddly Spelled Names Dept.: Triton's varsity roster features names such as Griffyn (Carpenter), Taran (Holderman), (Joel) Meister, (Ben) Montalbano, and (Krieg) Vories. Meister and Montalbano were on the Trojans' baseball team that played at Bethany in 2008; as the timer, baseball announcer Tony Miller figures to be seated very near announcer Carl Leinbach for tonight's game.
- The Bruins fell to Triton 68-43 Jan. 19, 2008, at Triton, and 45-25 Jan. 20, 2007, in the Menno Lands. The second quarter of the 2007 JV game featured Montalbano standing in one place with the ball for over two minutes until a Triton timeout.
