NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Boys basketball
BAUGO TWP., Ind. — James Helmuth drained a three-point goal from the right corner with 5.1 seconds to play, and Shane Cook's off-balance 30-footer was no good at the buzzer as Bethany escaped Jimtown with a 30-28 victory Tuesday night.
Seth Kauffman made a layup with 1:45 left in the third quarter for his 1,000th and 1,001st career points. He finished the game with 1,003, 143 points short of Eliot Friesen's school records. Bethany missed its first five shots and did not score until Hamilton Thorne punched in a bucket with 6:42 left in the second period. But the host Jimmies wold hit an even longer cold streak, as Brian Hosinski ended an 11-0 Bethany run that stretched for 13 minutes across the entire second quarter. Hosinski finished with six points, while Bret Giddings led Jimtown with nine on 3-of-4 shooting.
Jimtown outscored Bethany 17-7 in the third quarter and led 28-22 after a long-range shot from Shane Cook with 3:37 remaining. Ben Bontreger sank a pair of free throws at 2:50 before Helmuth cut the lead to one with a minute and 54 seconds left in the game. Bethany resorted to fouling in an attempt to get the ball back, and Femi Hollinger-Janzen picked up his second with just over 25 seconds on the clock. But Helmuth intercepted the inbound pass with only a slight bobble before receiving the outlet pass for the game-winning shot. After a series of timeouts, Jimtown took the ball out of bounds just inside midcourt with 2.2 seconds left, and the rest is history.
Tuesday's game marked the lowest point total in any of Bethany's 440 wins dating back to 1965. The Bruins are 10-7 and will ride a six-game winning streak into Saturday's contest against LaVille at the Menno Lands. Jimtown falls to 9-9, 3-3 in the Northern State Conference
