NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Baseball
GOSHEN — The Bruins held on for a wild 19-18 victory over the Fort Wayne Crusaders Saturday afternoon as the rain held off at Bodiker Field. After a first inning that saw 12 runs and 13 hits, chasing both starting pitchers, each team scored twice in the second while Bethany repeated the feat in the third. The Crusaders fought back with three runs on four hits and a throwing error in their half of the fourth inning, but Bethany scored six in their turn behind two consecutive errors and a two-run triple from Seth Kauffman. Both teams saw four straight batters reach base in the sixth inning, each scoring three times.
With the score 19-14 after five innings, Adam Wilson and Braden Arnold led off with two straight walks for the visitors. Jordan Arnold hit into a force play with Wilson out at third before Adam Schmitz lifted an 0-2 pitch from re-entered starter Mikey Kelly into a routine fly ball to right field. Attempting a one-handed catch, the usually-reliable James Helmuth dropped the ball, allowing Braden Arnold to score, while Jordan Arnold advanced to third base and the batter reached second. Nate Hinsky lined the next pitch off the left field batter's-eye fence, scoring both Arnold, and a groundout later, Luke Klimek singled to score Hinsky.
The Bruins escaped the sixth on a weak ground ball, but could manage no more in the bottom of the inning than a one-out walk by Russell Klassen. Seth Kauffman moved from shortstop to pitch in the seventh for the save opportunity and induced a groundout to the first man he saw. Wilson hit a double over the head of center fielder Ben Bontreger, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in the person of Josh Jennings. Jennings lined out to right on the first pitch, and Wilson trotted over to third base as the ball was returned to the pitcher. But he went to the coach's box to discuss strategy without first calling for time. After much protestation from the Bruins and conference by the umpires, Wilson was ruled out for leaving the baseline and the Bruins prevailed victoriously in two hours and 51 minutes.
