Two Alumni Teams Start Season

[Editor's note: This is the first edition of a column that will keep an eye on ex-Bruins playing athletics at a collegiate level. I hope that this column will appear weekly and have a snappy title; we shall see if either of those happen.]

When he started the second period of the Indiana-UIC men's soccer exhibition game last Tuesday night, Femi Hollinger-Janzen '12 became the first Bruin to appear in intercollegiate athletic competition for the 2012-13 season. Hollinger-Janzen tallied two shots (one of which was on goal) in 60 minutes for the Hoosiers, then played eight minutes Saturday night in an exhibition game against Mexican club Chivas. IU tied both games 1-1. He figures to become the second Bethany alumnus to appear in an official NCAA Division I game — Indiana begins its regular season Friday night at Saint Louis.

Two alumnae began their seasons in Montana Friday night with the Goshen College volleyball team, which played four matches in the Carroll/Great Falls Tournament to begin their season. (I think this is the only time a Bethany graduate will play in the Mountain or Pacific time zones this fall.) Hannah Grieser '09 appeared in every set of the trip for the Maple Leafs (0-4, 0-0 Crossroads League), compiling 13 kills, 3 digs, a block and an ace. Mandy Schlabach '11 started the second set Friday night against 36th-ranked Great Falls, but did not appear in the box score. Lexi Kantz '10 is also on the team but did not play.
