Bruins Beyond Bethany: Sept. 6, 2012

[Editor's note: This is a column that will keep an eye on ex-Bruins playing athletics at a collegiate level. I hope that this column will appear weekly and have a snappy title; we shall see if either of those happen.]

Men's Soccer

Bluffton: Jeff Yoder '12 has started both of the Beavers' games between the pipes; while Bluffton dropped both games by identical 4-1 scores, each loss appeared to have several shots redirected in the box, which are difficult for any goalkeeper to stop. Yoder had eight saves for a team that was outshot 33-25.

Eastern Mennonite: Austin Mumaw '12 did not play for the Royals, who are 1-1-1 in their first three games.

Goshen: Joel Yoder '11 started and recorded two shots on goal in Goshen's 3-2 men's soccer win over Purdue-Calumet on Saturday. Yoder played 48 minutes; classmate Aaron Stiffney was in for 14 minutes and recorded no stats.

Indiana: Femi Hollinger-Janzen '12 was named to the all-tournament team in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Femi had five shots (two on goal) in a scoreless draw with San Diego State on Sunday; IU held a 29-10 shot advantage and a 19-2 lead in corner kicks but could not score. Friday night, Hollinger-Janzen picked up his first career assist in a 3-0 win over Clemson when his shot rebounded to Kyle Sparks with 18:58 to play.

Indiana plays in South Bend this weekend at 5 p.m. Friday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Women's Soccer

Friday night, Emma Caskey '12 started for Goshen in a 4-1 loss to Viterbo (Wis.) at the Cardinal Stritch tournament in Milwaukee. In that game, she tallied a shot on goal; three days later against William Penn, Caskey took four shots and one became her first career goal. Malaina Weldy '12 started on Goshen's back line against the Statesmen, while Gina Gautsche '12 entered as a substitute.

Sharisse Yoder '11 started both games in a Marian University weekend sweep of Aquinas (Mich.) and Benedictine (Ill.), appearing in the box scores with a corner kick and a shot on goal.

Volleyball

Mattie Lehman '11 has started all five contests for the Eastern Mennonite Royals, who started their campaign 1-4 last week. Lehman tallied seven kills, 107 assists and 44 digs in the St. Vincent Bearcat Challenge at Latrobe, Pa. last weekend; for the season, her 139 assists constitute six-sevenths of EMU's total, while her 56 digs (as a setter!) is second on the team. Alena Yoder '12 has yet to appear for the Royals, who will begin Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Tuesday against Washington and Lee (Va.).

Goshen dropped its conference opener Wednesday night at No. 17 Taylor. Hannah Grieser '09 was 4-for-14 attacking in addition to an ace and three digs. Mandy Schlabach '11 also saw action for the Maple Leafs (4-6, 0-1 Conference Formerly Known as Mid-Central).

Men's Tennis

Daniel Buschert '09 saw his first varsity action of the season Tuesday, winning 9-8 (7-4) against the University of Saint Francis' #3 doubles team. Buschert defeated the Cougars' Michael Thompson 6-4, 6-4 in singles play; Goshen won the team match 8-1. In exhibition action at Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday, Seth Krabill '11 won matches against the Wildcats' Kamen Tabor (8-4) and Austin Doerr (8-0). Buschert defeated Alan Murphy 8-4 but lost to Alex Hornet 8-0.

Women's Tennis

Maria Thomas '12 was half of the doubles team that almost got Goshen's first team point of the season Tuesday afternoon. Playing with partner Anika Baumgartner (Goshen '11), the Leafs duo led 7-6 in the best-of-sixteen pro set before losing 8-6 in a tiebreaker to Saint Francis. In exhibition action, Thomas and Corine Alvarez '10 won 8-1.

Women's (and briefly men's) Cross Country

Goshen women's cross country finished second in its Hokum Karem Saturday at the Maple Leaf Athletic Complex. Ali Hochstetler '11 paired with Cynthia Medina (NorthWood '12) to finish second in 38:26 over 10,000 meters (6.22 miles). Erin Helmuth '09 was part of the sixth-place pair in 41:06, closely followed by classmate Alita Yoder and her partner in 41:38. Running unattached, Twila Albrecht '11 was half of the 16th pair across the line, finishing in 48:43. Nick Handrich '09 did not run for the men in their race.

Jenae Hershberger '11 was 56th in 17:19 Saturday at the Wichita State University Gold Classic. Her Hesston team was tenth.
