Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, October 19-25

By advancing to state for what I think is the third time in school history (and setting a PR by more than 15 seconds), sophomore Ali Hochstetler wins the Athlete of the Week for October 19-25.

Next Week: Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, November 2, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. (The times by week are here.) As I said several weeks ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. (You can even include the quotes if you want.) The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. Señor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, October 12-18

At Saturday's girls cross country regional, sophomore Ali Hochstetler advanced to next weekend's New Haven semistate. While this was not unexpected, given her 19th-place state finish in 2007, the girls team also ran in regionals. This was due, in large part, to the race of Desiree Porter. Porter improved her PR (personal record) by 1:40 to finish 35th in a time of 22:02. Had she finished two minutes slower at 23:42, she would have been 67th place, which would have changed the team scores as such:
Real Team Scores Pts| 23:42 Team Scores Pts
1. Northridge.....41| 1. Northridge......41
2. Goshen.........83| 2. Goshen..........83
3t.Fairfield......87| 3. Warsaw..........86
3t.Warsaw.........87| 4. Fairfield.......87
5. Bethany.......158|5t. Concord........117 (23:33)
6. Concord.......181|5t. Bethany........117 (23:42)

(When two teams are tied, the first tiebreaker is the performance of each team's sixth runner, shown in parentheses to the right of the score; the line indicates the break between teams that advance to regional and those that don't.) As you can see, had Porter simply matched her PR, the Bruins would have seen their season end until next August. Since she didn't, the Bruins advanced to the first team regional in their history. For that reason, frosh Desiree Porter is the Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for September 12-18.

Eligibility: As four weeks have elapsed since her AOW win on September 21, senior Hannah Grieser becomes eligible again next week. Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are winners from the last four weeks: eighth grader Jesse Bontreger, junior Mikey Kelly, and senior Daniel Buschert.

Next Week:
Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, October 26, at 3:15 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. This is a change from the traditional 5:00. As I said several weeks ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post.

Site Features: A Brief Tutorial

Recently, it crossed my mind that while BBB readership has spiked in the last couple of months, I've never really taken the time to explain what the different pieces of the site are and how they work. So, without further adieu, the Bleeding Bruin Blue Website Tutorial (insert feigned applause here)!

At the top of the page, there's a blue bar with a search box and a "Flag Blog" button. I certainly hope that this blog will never need to be flagged (not sure what that is, but pretty sure it's more than a man in a striped shirt throwing his hanky and gesturing), but if it does, that's a pretty good sign that something here needs to go. On the right side, you'll see a sign-in link and a create blog link. That's fairly self-explanatory.
Down the left side of the page, you'll see the posts making up Bleeding Bruin Blue. The green thing at the top of each one is the title, and the gray words are links. To e-mail the post, click on the envelope icon at the bottom of the post; to leave a comment, click on the text that says "0 comments" or something similar.
The right side of the page should start with a sports scores box, but this gave out Saturday night so I had to take it down. Will look for new one.
Below that, temporarily leading off the column, the second baseman, number one, are links to important BBB pages like the main page, This Week in Bruindom, and sports' previews. Come mid-November or so, the fall sports previews will crawl into their den and sleep until August while the basketball previews take their place.
Hitting second, the center fielder, number five, you'll find links to relevant external sites, like a Google calendar with Bruin sporting events (currently just thru basketball season), the Bethany athletics page, the BC tennis blog, and some basketball sites.
In the 3-hole, catching, number fourteen, is the archive. By clicking the hierarchical arrows, you can get a link to any post ever published on BBB, save the deleted ones.
In the cleanup spot, pitching, number seven are the team and opponent labels. By clicking on these you can find all of the posts pertaining to, say, middle school girls soccer, or Wawasee.
Finishing off the right column, eschewing the baseball lineup references, is a doppler radar/weather warning widget. Put your mouse over it and it grows. No, I don't know why the box is too small for the image. On the top are any active warnings for Elkhart County (this may or may not be where you are as you read it), and below that is the radar. If you really want to see a large version, click on the image and drag it up into your address bar.
On the bottom of the page is a counter showing how many times this page has been visited since I installed it, which was August 22 give or take a couple days.
Below that is a banner showing the temperature, conditions, humidity, wind speed, and visibility (in both traditional and metric units) for Goshen. Click on it and you get a full report.

That's the tutorial. Questions? Comments? Leave them in the comments or e-mail me.

Sectional Credits

For those of you who aren't aware, Bethany just finished hosting a girls soccer sectional about two hours ago. It was an eight-team tournament, which meant that there were two games each on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, while the championship was the only game tonight. Señor Loco was privileged to be at all seven games, and would like to take the space here to recognize all of the people that made the tournament so interesting to watch, that made it run so smoothly, that proved even a school of 190 can host a school of 2040 (Warsaw) in the state tournament, etc. I realize that this list may be incomplete or slightly incorrect: if that's true, I'll meet you at the bottom of the post.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, October 5-11

There are weeks where choosing this award is difficult because there are many good choices. This week, the Bruins did fairly well overall, save a couple of sectional slip-ups, but not very many people had dominating performances. Due to this, the Athlete of the Week comes from an unlikely source: the middle school. (I've used that line before. I know it.) In sort of a 1979 Phil Niekro-esque fashion, the Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for October 5-11 goes to eighth grade cross country runner Jesse Bontreger.

Eligibility: As four weeks have elapsed since his AOW win on September 14, senior Jordan Weaver becomes eligible again next week. Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are winners from the last four weeks: Bontreger, junior Mikey Kelly, senior Daniel Buschert, and senior Hannah Grieser.

Next Week: Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, October 19, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. As I said several weeks ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, September 28-October 4

The Bruin tennis team continued its winning ways this week, going 2-0 (with a JV win on Monday thrown into the mix) and winning the first sectional title in program history. It was out of the flurry of activity provided by the sectional that this week's winner came.
While our tennis team has seen its share of dominant performances, such as Matt Amstutz winning four 6-0 sets in one day on August 30 or Ben Mast coming back from an 0-6 first-set loss to take his first career varsity match 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 on August 19, no team had provided a real signature moment, a headline photo of the fall sports season. That changed Saturday morning. Despite entering the sectional tournament as obvious favorites, having beaten all the other teams in the tournament, we found ourselves with our backs against the fence, down 1-2 in the team match and 1-5 in the third set at #2 doubles. Jared Schwartzentruber at #2 singles was entering a third set, but that would mean nothing if doubles lost. As coach Matt Miller said at the time, "I think we're about to see a lot of people crying."But that was when things started to change. We took the next four games to tie the score at 5-5. Both teams held serves in the 11th and 12th games, sending the match to a tiebreak. As Jared was up 4-0 in the third set, the team match and both team's seasons came down to this tiebreaker.
"Mikey's booming serve opened the tiebreaker for a 1-0 Bruins lead. Two points for the Falcons gave them the 2-1 advantage. Then a Daniel overhead put us at 2-2. Then things started happening. Daniel and Mikey loosened up again, and played aggressive, and won four straight points. Now we had a match point. It was a long way back from being down 1-5 in the third. After Mikey tried to win it with two big serves, he was able to instead end it on a stretching, well placed, cross-court lob. Tiebreak heros for the Bruins, disappointment for the Falcons."
A signature moment we had. #2 doubles would ride the momentum into the afternoon, taking their match 6-2, 6-1 in only 52 minutes and giving Bethany a 1-0 lead on its way to a 4-1 sectional championship. This posed a problem, however: it was the team of Daniel and Mikey who had come back in the face of such long odds. The title of "Athlete of the Week" indicates a singular winner. Solving the problem, Buschert was ineligible this week due to last week's award win. Therefore, the Athlete of the Week for September 28-October 4 is junior Mikey Kelly.

Eligibility: As four weeks have elapsed since his AOW win on September 7, eighth grader Matt Greenlee becomes eligible again next week. Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are winners from the last four weeks: Kellysenior Daniel Buschert, senior Hannah Grieser, and senior Jordan Weaver.

Next Week: Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, October 12, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. As I said several weeks ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post.
