Bethany/Jimtown Opens Tennis Sectional

The draw for the Goshen sectional of the IHSAA boys tennis tournament was made this afternoon at Goshen High School. Bethany will play Jimtown Wednesday afternoon in the first round. Semifinals, on Thursday, will see NorthWood playing the Bethany/Jimtown winner and Goshen playing Fairfield. The final is Friday.

Admission is free. The team tournament is single-elimination. Any #1 singles player who is undefeated in the tourney when his team is eliminated advances into the individual tourney; the same holds for #1 doubles. We'll deal with those if/when they become relevant.

The team schedule is below.

The boys were two-time sectional champions in the five years of the single 64-class tournament, while the girls were 5-for-14 in the 32-class alignment still used there.

Bruins To Hit Road for 2011-12 Sectionals

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK starting Aug. 15

INDIANAPOLIS — Bethany fans will get to familiarize themselves with the highways of northern Indiana when they travel to support the Bruins in class 1A sectional play this year, according to documents posted by the Lafayette Journal & Courier.

Bethany plays seven sports in which enrollment classes are used for IHSAA tournament play; the nearest sectional site to Bethany in those seven sports is Mishawaka Marian, to be used for girls soccer, some 41 minutes away according to Google Maps. In the first season for a two-class IHSAA tournament in soccer, the boys sectional will be played at Newton Park in Lakeville, separated from Bethany by 43 minutes along U.S. 6 and U.S. 31.

The other five sports will travel to locations in northeast Indiana where sectionals have previously been held: boys basketball will be at Fort Wayne Blackhawk, girls basketball and softball will be at Lakewood Park Christian School in Auburn, while baseball and volleyball will open state tournament play at Fort Wayne Canterbury.

Sectional hosts for the non-class tournaments in tennis, cross country, and track are not yet known. The dates, fields, and hosts for all class tournaments, as released by the IHSAA, are after the jump.

Baseball, Tennis Sectionals Set

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

INDIANAPOLIS and GOSHEN — The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced the sectional pairings for tennis and baseball within the last 27 hours. NorthWood will play the winner of a Jimtown-Goshen first round match on Thursday as well, with the winners meeting for the championship Friday.

In baseball, Bethany will open sectional play with a rare Wednesday-night contest next week at Fort Wayne Canterbury, facing off against three-time state champion Fort Wayne Blackhawk. The Braves have won nine of the last ten sectionals, with the only break coming in 2009 when Canterbury knocked off Bethany in the final. Other first round games will pit the host Cavaliers against Hamilton and ECA against Lakewood Park on Thursday and Saturday. Bethany or Blackhawk will meet Howe in a semifinal on Memorial Day morning with the other semifinal to follow; the sectional championship game is set for 5 p.m. that afternoon.

Bethany's complete paths to the state tournament follow the jump.

The 64 sectionals around the state, 16 in each of four classes, are scheduled to begin on Monday, May 23 and continue until Saturday, May 28.
