Caskey's Scoring Outbreak Nets Athlete of the Week Honor

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Caskey
GOSHEN — After tallying four goals and two assists as part of a 23-shot Bruin barrage Tuesday night in a 10-0 rout of the South Bend Riley JV, senior Emma Caskey is the Athlete of the Week for August 14-20, 2011. While the Bruins have reached ten goals three times in the last two-plus years, the four-goal individual performance is the most since another Emma, 2010 graduate Gerig, put four shots in the net against Riley on Aug. 18, 2009.

Selection: All Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts of high schoolers fitting those criteria, are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: therefore, Caskey will be ineligible until Sunday, Sept. 18. Nominations are taken each week until Sunday at 5:30 p.m., at which time the Athlete of the Week committee makes its final decision.

Nominations for next week's award are due Sunday, Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to bleedingbruinblue@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete]" in the subject line. If you highlight a player's name and click on the "nominate" link at the top of the post, it should generate an e-mail message nominating that player. The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. We reserve the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.
Previous award winners can be found on our Athlete of the Week page.

Helmuth
GOSHEN — The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week Committee has announced that, after a trio of doubles in the preceding seven days which would, by itself, place the batter in a tie for 75th all-time on Bethany's career doubles list, senior James Helmuth is the Athlete of the Week for April 24-30, 2011. Helmuth's three doubles in this week's one baseball game comprised the entirety of the Bruins' attack on the hit column this week. In addition, they resulted in three runs batted in as the Bruins closed a 6-0 Jimtown lead to 8-6 in the fourth inning before the Jimmies tallied 13 runs in the bottom of the frame to win 21-6. This week  is the first in which Helmuth was named Athlete of the Week in the award's three-year run.

Previous award winners can be found on our Athlete of the Week page.

Eligibility: All Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts of high schoolers fitting those criteria, are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: therefore, Helmuth, Marla zumFelde, Sharisse  Yoder and Kyle Miller are ineligible for next week's award.

Next Week: Nominations for next week's award are due Sunday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m.; athletes can be nominated until the decision is made. Bleeding Bruin Blue Athletes of the Week, October 18-November 29

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

It has come to my attention that the Athlete of the Week award has not been given since October 18, the day after the girls soccer team won their sectional. (Has it really only been six weeks?) Therefore, without further ado or Freddy Adu, here are the previously decided but previously unannounced Athletes of the Week:

  • October 18-24: Marla zumFelde
  • October 25-November 7: No Bethany competitions
  • November 8-14: Ali Hochstetler
  • November 15-21: Trent Yoder
  • November 22-28: Seth Kauffman
Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts thereof are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: therefore, Kauffman, Yoder and Hochstetler are ineligible for the November 29-December 5 award.

Next Week: Nominations will be due Sunday, Dec. 6, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, September 27-October 3, October 4-10, & October 11-17

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athletes of the Week for September 27-October 3 and October 4-10 are, respectively, sophomore Emma Caskey and junior Mattie Lehman. To see their exploits for the week in question, type their names into the search box above, then scroll down.

The Athlete of the Week for October 11-17 is senior Kelly Snyder, who staved off seven straight would-be game-winning or game-continuing kicks in a shootout to advance to the sectional final. In that game, her seven saves kept Bethany's 1-0 lead intact, but the most important plays were not credited as such. Snyder deflected a Warsaw free kick in the final half-minute, then covered a deflection of the ensuing corner kick with six seconds to play to assure Bethany of their sectional title. Snyder also set a record for the most Athlete of the Week nominations this week.

Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts thereof are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: however, this rule does not apply during postseason play. Therefore, the players who would ordinarily be ineligible for the Oct. 18-24 award are all eligible, because their teams have begun tournament play.

Next Week: Nominations will be due Sunday, Oct. 25, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line.
