Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, November 23-29

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for November 23-29, averaging 20.5 points per game over that timespan, is Seth Kauffman. If you must know exactly what he's done to deserve this honor, type his name into the search box at the top of the page (or click here). If you don't understand the award, feel free to comment (link at the bottom of the post) or e-mail me.

Eligibility:
Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners. (Kauffman, Marla zumFelde and Sol Brenneman are the only winners since eligibility reset after fall sports.)

Next Week:
Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, December 7, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The list of times by week is linked to on the right side. As I said several weeks ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. (You can even include the quotes if you want.) The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. Señor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

If you still don't understand, feel free to comment (link at the bottom of the post) or e-mail me.

Eligibility:
Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners. (Brenneman is the only winner since eligibility reset after fall sports.)

Next Week:
Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, November 23, at 5:00 p.m.

*Ryan Zellmer's final line is 1 0-0 2 (he had one field goal). However, he also scored off a missed free throw--while on defense. The points should be credited to the closest Bethany player, except that I don't know who that was. Until then, I have credited him with a negative field goal. This field goal is credited to the Bethany team. Both teams' totals are correct with regard to this field goal.

Basketball Scrimmage Formats

These are the two legal basketball scrimmage formats specified by the IHSAA. I'm not sure which one we will use (it may even be one for the boys and the other for the girls), so I'll list them both. For the girls scrimmage, the format will be announced over the P.A. system at the beginning of each quarter.

Option 1
  • 15 minute warm-up session
  • 4 -- 15 minute quarters with running clock
  • each team allowed one time out (with clock stopped) during each of the four quarters
  • 5 minutes between quarters for drink and rest.
  • No free throws will be shot.
  • Score will be kept but will start over each quarter.
  • Substitution at any time during a dead ball.
  • 1st Quarter: Play half court man-to-man defense only. (No full court defense!)
  • 2nd Quarter: Play half court zone defense and/or switching defenses. (No full court defense!)
  • 3rd Quarter: Full court defense is allowed. A consensus with both coaches is required.
  • 4th Quarter: Each coach may choose their defense. (Discussion prior to quarter is suggested.) (Mutual consent on pressing)

Option 2
  • 15 minute warm-up
  • 5 -- 12 minute "quarters"
  • Each team allowed one time out (with clock stopped) during each of the five "quarters"
  • Running clock for the first eleven minutes of each "quarter"
  • No free throws during the first eleven minutes of each "quarter"
  • During the last minute of each "quarter" the clock would stop, free throws would be shot (both teams designated as in the 1-and-1)
  • 4 minutes between quarters for rest and drink
  • Score will be kept but will start over each "quarter".
  • Substitution at any time during a dead ball.
  • 1st "Quarter": Play half court man-to-man defense only. (No full court defense!)
  • 2nd "Quarter": Play half court zone defense and/or switching defenses. (No full court defense!)
  • 3rd "Quarter": Full court defense is allowed. A consensus with both coaches is required.
  • 4th "Quarter": Each coach may choose their defense. (Discussion prior to quarter is suggested.) (Mutual consent on pressing)
  • 5th "Quarter": Each coach may choose their defense. (Discussion prior to quarter is suggested.) (Mutual consent on pressing)
  • One of the five "quarters" must be used as a "Second String" "quarter." This "quarter" should be agreed upon by the coaches before the scrimmage.

Quoting:
"Obviously losing 80% of our scoring is a lot to fill in a year. We have been working a lot in the off-season and early in the preseason with becoming better shooters and trying to get to the basket for high percentage shots. The overall spirit of the team is tremendous and I believe that key to our success this season is going to be chemistry."

Scrimmage: Sat., November 8, 6:00 p.m. vs. Goshen at Menno Lands
First Game: Fri., November 14, 6:00 (JV)/7:30 (V) p.m. at Culver Academy

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: October 26-November 1

My self-devised rules for Athlete of the Week state that "upon receiving the award, a player shall be ineligible for the next four (4) weeks." Obviously, this creates a problem when the only athlete in action won the previous week's award. Since it might be, like, an earth-shattering problem if there isn't an Athlete of the Week, I'm suspending that rule for this week and giving the award by default to sophomore Ali Hochstetler.

Since the fall sports season has ended, eligibility will reset and everyone is eligible for next week's award.

Next Week: Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, November 9, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. (The times by week are here.) As I said several weeks ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post.
