Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: February 22-28

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for February 15-21 is Mark DeLeeuw. To know what DeLeeuw has done to win this honor, type his name into the search box at the top of the page (or click here). If you don't understand the award, feel free to comment (link at the bottom of the post) or e-mail me.

Eligibility:
Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are the winners from the last three weeks: DeLeeuw, Jenae Rupp, and Seth Kauffman. As three weeks have elapsed since Natalie Thorne's win on February 1, he becomes eligible next week.

Next Week:
Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, March 1, at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The list of times by week is linked to on the right side and here. As I said several months ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. (You can even include the quotes if you want; a link that should do this is at the top of this post.) The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. SeƱor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: February 8-14

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for February 8-14 is Jenae Rupp. To know what Rupp has done to win this honor, type her name into the search box at the top of the page (or click here). If you don't understand the award, feel free to comment (link at the bottom of the post) or e-mail me.

Eligibility:
Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are the winners from the last three weeks: Rupp, Seth Kauffman, and Natalie Thorne. As three weeks have elapsed since Ben Bontreger's win on January 25, he becomes eligible next week.

Next Week:
Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, February 22, at 4:00 p.m.

Four Score minus 79½ Months Ago...

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

...seems like forever. Amazingly enough, though, it was only six months ago today that the thing which morphed into Bleeding Bruin Blue started. From those humble beginnings, this site has grown to over 210 pages and almost 2,100 pageloads as we know it today. The first previews were written August 8 (during the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, no less), I first entered into conversation about the site on August 14, and the Athlete of the Week came about for the first time on August 18. Publicity also skyrocketed in this time period, as the site was mentioned on the BC Tennis blog by the 21st and the Bethany website by the 28th.
While I could continue this history for some time, I will save that for a later point (next August, perhaps?). In the meantime, I'd like to thank some of the people who have helped me make this site what it is today. I realize that there may be a few people on here twice, and probably a few I've forgotten.
  • Of course to athletic director Bryan Kehr, who runs the athletic program without which the site would be nothing.
  • Matt Miller and Brent Reinhardt, who discovered the site (independently, I presume) and mentioned it to me by the second day of school this year.
  • Communications coordinator Kevin Miller, who was responsible for linking from the Bethany website and the Keeping In Touch newsletter.
  • Matt Miller, who came up with the idea for Athlete of the Week.
  • Benchwarmer Design, who designed the masthead at the top of the page.
  • Whoever devised the basketball scoresheet in the Bethany program, which is easily the best that I have seen in the area. (Westview is probably #2.)
  • Everyone who has nominated players for Athlete of the Week (you know who you are), for doing that. The problem is that there aren't enough of you.
  • Denise Risser, the most frequent responder to such details as trivia contests and minutely incorrect basketball posts. (I agree, the fact that Jim has coached 29+ years rather than 28+ is important.)
  • My bike, which has allowed me to get back to Bethany to cover a whole lot of tennis, cross country, and soccer.
  • Lyle Miller, whose photos from cross country sectional and regional account for a number of the photos accessible from this site.
  • The Elkhart Truth and The Goshen News, whose pages have alerted me to much good information.
  • Matt Miller, who gave the first (and so far, only) interview with the site...even if it's sideways.
  • My family, for putting up with an at times insane web designer with occasional technical problems.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: January 25-31

NOMINATE FOR NEXT WEEK'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for January 25-31 is Natalie Thorne. To know what Natalie has done to win this honor, type her name into the search box at the top of the page (or click here). If you don't understand the award, feel free to comment (link at the bottom of the post) or e-mail me.

Eligibility:
Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are the winners from the last three weeks: Thorne, Ben Bontreger, and Jenae Rupp. As three weeks have elapsed since Andy Slagel's win on January 11, he becomes eligible next week.

Next Week:
Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, February 8, at 4:00 p.m.
