Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, September 27-October 3, October 4-10, & October 11-17

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athletes of the Week for September 27-October 3 and October 4-10 are, respectively, sophomore Emma Caskey and junior Mattie Lehman. To see their exploits for the week in question, type their names into the search box above, then scroll down.

The Athlete of the Week for October 11-17 is senior Kelly Snyder, who staved off seven straight would-be game-winning or game-continuing kicks in a shootout to advance to the sectional final. In that game, her seven saves kept Bethany's 1-0 lead intact, but the most important plays were not credited as such. Snyder deflected a Warsaw free kick in the final half-minute, then covered a deflection of the ensuing corner kick with six seconds to play to assure Bethany of their sectional title. Snyder also set a record for the most Athlete of the Week nominations this week.

Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts thereof are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: however, this rule does not apply during postseason play. Therefore, the players who would ordinarily be ineligible for the Oct. 18-24 award are all eligible, because their teams have begun tournament play.

Next Week: Nominations will be due Sunday, Oct. 25, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. Señor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

Bethany advances to the Goshen regional, where they will play Penn at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night. More will be posted as it is available.

NOMINATE FOR MENNO LANDS MEMORIES or ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

After yesterday's post with the video of a sectional soccer goal caused the number of fans on Bleeding Bruin Blue's Facebook page to jump over forty percent, I realized that another video had not yet seen the light of day. Observe as Seth Kauffman dunks on Dec. 6, 2008 against Prairie Heights:

(BCS video)
Kauffman, who repeated this feat three more times last year, is believed to be the first Bethany player to dunk in a game since Anders Weaver in 1997.

GOSHEN — As the fall sports season draws to a close, Bleeding Bruin Blue would like to take the opportunity to point out some occurrences of the Bruins in semi-mainstream media.

Michiana Sports Authority has available on its website four Bethany soccer games. In order, they are:

In addition, boys soccer coach Hank Willems appeared on Inside the Game with the same site in August. This interview can be heard during the pregame show here.

The Warsaw Times Union's Anthony Gadson was at Bodiker Field Tuesday and Thursday nights for the sectional soccer games. His reports can be found below:
Reports by the Kendallville News-Sun and Milford Mail-Journal are not available without subscribing.

Finally, Bethany has released this video of Femi Hollinger-Janzen scoring the Bruin goal in the boys sectional final at Goshen High School. We pick up the action with approximately 2½ minutes to play in the first half:

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, September 13-19 & 20-26

NOMINATE FOR MENNO LANDS MEMORIES or ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for September 6-12, with three goals (one game-tying) and two assists (one on a game-winning goal) in two many games, is seventh grader Isaac Brenneman. The winner for the next week, scoring a goal and tallying two assists, is junior Joel Yoder.

Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts thereof are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: Brenneman, Yoder, and Femi Hollinger-Janzen are ineligible for September 27-October 3.

Next Week: Nominations will be due Sunday, Oct. 4, at 5:30 p.m.
