Bethany Volleyball Invitational Schedule

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

GOSHEN — Bethany volleyball will open its own invitational Saturday morning with a match against South Bend Riley, the athletic department announced today. The field has been the same for every edition of the Bethany Invitational, and Central Noble, Northridge, and South Bend Riley are back for the fourth invitational as well.

The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the early afternoon, with the six matches evenly divided between the Menno Lands and the middle-school gym. Under IHSAA rules, the tournament will be played to the best of 3 sets rather than the usual best-of-5.

GOSHEN — In his first match with Bethany after transferring from Wawasee, Drew Sylvester did not take long to be noticed. He scored in the game's tenth minute to put the Bruins up 1-0, then added another tally 22 minutes later and a third after halftime as the Bruins routed conference rival Culver Community 6-0.
Sylvester, whose hat trick is the first by a Bruin since Jordan Weaver's on September 9, 2008, was joined in scoring by Josh Stoltzfus, Femi Hollinger-Janzen, and Joel Yoder. Despite allowing all six goals, Culver goalkeeper Zach Loehmer was credited with 12 saves in the Bruin barrage; however, his teammates were unable to muster a single shot on goal.

GOSHEN — The Bruins defeated Northridge 3-2 tonight for what is believed to be the first time since Bethany began playing tennis in 1992. The deciding point came at #3 singles, where Nate Brendle successfully defended a pair of points that would have sent his first match as a Bruin to a third set at 6-4, 4-6. Instead, he captured that game and the next two as well to take the match in an hour and 43 minutes. The top Raiders doubles team of David Long and Alex Radelich came back as well, returning from a third-set hole at 3-4 to win the final set and set the team score in stone.

GOSHEN — Opportunity, the saying goes, knocks but once. While the number, as well as the possibility of ringing the doorbell, may be up for debate in baseball, the premise remains true: take advantage of the chances available. Monday, it was the Crusaders doing that in an 18-2, five-inning victory over the Bruins at Bodiker Field.

Fort Wayne went down quietly in the first inning, as a walk erased four pitches later on a fielder's choice provided their only baserunner. Bethany started off auspiciously, as walks drawn by Peter Schrock and Jared Miller were followed by a single from Andy Slagel to load the bases with no outs. Such confidence would soon collapse, however, with two strikeouts and a ground ball leaving the bases full of Bruins. The Crusaders went down 1-2-3 in the ensuing half-inning and the game remained scoreless.

The second inning gave the home team their best shot at the scoreboard, and they responded by reaching base on three-ball counts with the first two hitters and advancing men to the corners with the third. Schrock knocked in a run with a sharp ground ball to center, and a single by Miller reloaded the bases. After Slagel took the payoff pitch for ball four, making the tally 2-0 for the home team, Bethany had a brilliant shot to hang a crooked number in the right field corner. But pitcher Kyle Miller nubbed a dribbler back to his mound counterpart, forcing the wiry, bespectacled shortstop out at home and getting thrown out at first to end the inning. The Crusaders scored without the benefit of a hit on offense—walk, stolen base, error, passed ball—and the Bruins went down quietly, leaving them up 2-1 entering the fourth.

In that inning, the visitors' opportunity knocked.
