Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, August 15-21

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

This week's Athlete of the Week did not take long to make his presence known, scoring five goals in his first two games as a Bruin after transferring from Wawasee. The athlete in question is junior Drew Sylvester.

Eligibility: All Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts of high schoolers fitting those criteria, are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: therefore, Sylvester will be ineligible until the week of September 12-18.
Next Week: Nominations for next week's award are due Sunday, August 29 at 5:00 p.m.; athletes can be nominated until the decision is made. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. We reserve the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Boys soccer
GOSHEN — In his first match with Bethany after transferring from Wawasee, Drew Sylvester did not take long to be noticed. He scored in the game's tenth minute to put the Bruins up 1-0, then added another tally 22 minutes later and a third after halftime as the Bruins routed conference rival Culver Community 6-0.
Sylvester, whose hat trick is the first by a Bruin since Jordan Weaver's on September 9, 2008, was joined in scoring by Josh Stoltzfus, Femi Hollinger-Janzen, and Joel Yoder. Despite allowing all six goals, Culver goalkeeper Zach Loehmer was credited with 12 saves in the Bruin barrage; however, his teammates were unable to muster a single shot on goal.

The deciding point came at #3 singles, where Nate Brendle successfully defended a pair of points that would have sent his first match as a Bruin to a third set at 6-4, 4-6. Instead, he captured that game and the next two as well to take the match in an hour and 43 minutes. The top Raiders doubles team of David Long and Alex Radelich came back as well, returning from a third-set hole at 3-4 to win the final set and set the team score in stone.

Bruin 'Keeper Snyder Signs With Goshen

GOSHEN — Just more than a day before the 2010 edition of the Bethany girls soccer team started play, a member of the 2009 edition officially revealed her intentions to keep playing. Kelly Snyder signed a national letter of intent to continue her academic and soccer careers at Goshen College, a decision announced by that institution this afternoon. Snyder, a four-year varsity starter between the goalposts at Bethany, will join classmate Marissa Weldy on the Goshen soccer team this year; the pair of Maple Leafs, along with Bluffton University's Karli Graybill and Hesston College's Sierra Wheeler, mean that two-thirds of last year's girls soccer seniors are playing collegiately.
Snyder was named Bleeding Bruin Blue's Athlete of the Week on October 18 last season after a series of nominations; her five saves in a shootout three days before, followed by a seven-save effort in the next match, were instrumental in Bethany's 2009 sectional title. Snyder finished with the second-most saves in school history, only ten behind 2005 graduate Melissa Gingerich; she holds three of the top five spots on the school's season saves list.
Snyder will be one of three Bruins on the Maple Leafs roster this season. Joining her will be Weldy and junior Jennifer Snyder, Kelly's sister. The signing also gives Goshen three goalkeepers for the upcoming season, as they also feature senior Rachel Mast and senior Lynn Weaver, the latter of whom dropped a 1-0 contest to Bethany while starting for Goshen in 2008.
Goshen's soccer team, which was 5-11-1 in 2009, is coached by Thavisith Mounsithiraj. The Maple Leafs compete in the Mid-Central Conference, where they finished ninth, and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Lakeland Christian to Join IHSAA

INDIANAPOLIS — The Executive Committee of the Indiana High School Athletic Association preliminarily approved the application for membership of Lakeland Christian Academy in Winona Lake during the committee’s meeting last Thursday. The minutes published by the IHSAA note that approval was granted “contingent upon successful resolution of outstanding issues,” which are not identified in the minutes; however, LCA is not accredited by the Indiana Department of Education, which is a prerequisite for IHSAA membership.

Bethany competes against Lakeland Christian in all five sports that both schools offer, and had played in golf before Bethany’s team was eliminated after the 2009 season. The Cougars are members of the Northern Indiana Soccer Conference along with the Bruins and five other schools, and have participated in both holiday basketball tournaments since the event’s 2009 inception.

With an enrollment of 149, Lakeland Christian would be classified as a 1A school in basketball, baseball, and volleyball; soccer classification standards for the beginning of two-class play in 2011 have not been announced. Geographically, LCA would most likely be assigned to sectional 51, which extends from Elkhart Christian to Hamilton and Fort Wayne, or sectional 50, which is bounded by Michigan City Marquette, Knox, and Argos. Lakeland Christian will not be eligible for the IHSAA state tournament series until the fall of 2012 at the earliest, as a two-year waiting period for new members is mandated by the association.

2009-10’s Most Memorable Moment

Tuesday, February 17, Jimtown H.S. gym, Baugo Twp., Indiana

Seth Kauffman scores his 1,000th career point against Jimtown Feb. 17. (Ricky Yoder/Be Blessed Photos via Michiana Sports Authority) The seeds for 2009-10’s most memorable moment were sown two years earlier, on another Tuesday night, two days before Thanksgiving of Seth Kauffman’s sophomore year. That night he took the floor in the Menno Lands for the first time in a varsity uniform, and he led the team in points that season with 258.
Forwards Jordan Shetler and Stephen Pettifor graduated in 2008, and Kauffman stepped in at the first chance he got. In that season’s inaugural game, he poured in 28 points; a last-second three-point shot from Justin Jantzi won the game for Westview 53-50.
The above games are just two examples of how Kauffman reached his standing on the career points list; at 693, he was ninth behind Ed Lewis, who graduated with 706 points, after playing only two years. Kauffman passed Lewis with 26 points in his first game, then surpassed Myron Bontreger’s mark of 751 on December 4 at Prairie Heights and topped David Plaster in a game five days later.
The names of Larry Crilow, Gary Chupp and Tom Lantz went down in similar fashion, and Kauffman entered the Fort Wayne Blackhawk contest January 30 with 932 career points. His 14 that night were three better than Michigan State recruit Russell Byrd did, and Bethany won 52-45. Kauffman added 18 against Clinton Christian and 13 versus Elkhart Christian the next week, putting him only 10 points from Jordan Buller and a tie for second place in school history; he would get 20 that Thursday night in Auburn, Indiana against Lakewood Park.
That set up a memorable Tuesday night on County Road 26, although the game would end up being memorable for a different, unexpected reason. Kauffman entered the game needing only three points for 1,000 in his career. For the man who was averaging 19 points per game, that was not expected to be a challenge.
A challenge it was: the Bruins as a team were held scoreless in the first quarter, and Kauffman did not score in the second quarter or the first three minutes of the third, missing his first three attempts. But with 4:52 to go in the penultimate period, orange pebbled rubber met white nylon and left Kauffman’s career total at 999.
The history Bruin fans were waiting to see came with 1:45 on the clock in the third quarter. Kauffman drove to the lane and shot a right-handed layup. The ball kissed the backboard, then the rim’s left side, and fell through the hoop. Play was blown dead after another second elapsed and Kauffman’s achievement was announced to all in attendance. He would be presented with the game ball before Bethany’s home game four days later against LaVille.
Kauffman finished his career with 1,104 points, only 42 behind four-year varsity player and 1997 alumnus Eliot Friesen.
