Monday Minutiae #4

NOMINATE FOR MENNO LANDS MEMORIES

Monday Minutiae and Trivia Thursday combine to make one set of trivia. At the end of June's questions, whoever has accumulated the most correct answers will win a pair of tickets to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle. To submit answers, shoot me an e-mail atsenorloco1908 (at) gmail (dot) com, with "trivia" in the subject line.

Remember that both Monday Minutiae and Trivia Thursday are part of the same contest, so this is the seventh total question and not just the fourth. The deadline is Monday, July 6 at noon Eastern Daylight Time.

The fourth question of Monday Minutiae is:
Since its inception last August, the Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week award has been given 39 times. What are the two surnames to receive the award in consecutive weeks?

3. (June 22) During the 1983-84 boys basketball season, one player made exactly 14 field goals in a game on three different occasions. Who was he?

2. (June 15) Who has the most doubles in the history of Bethany's softball program?

1. (June 8) Name the two players in Bethany baseball history with a batting average of .500 or better in a season (minimum 40 at bats).

The Season In A Blink: Introduction

NOMINATE FOR MENNO LANDS MEMORIES

A number of sports, we all know, have an element of time. In fact, when considering things like the length of time before a pitcher delivers in baseball, almost all sports have rules about time. The clock can run at a normal, even pace, like a cross country time of 20:37 takes exactly 20 minutes and 37 seconds to perform. It can also be distorted, like the last ten seconds of our boys basketball game with Westview that lasted five minutes (an increase of 3,000 percent). But even then, the scoreboard clock is a banana slug to its kangaroo cousin, the wall clock.

(Awkward metaphor, I know.)

This is my attempt to reverse that trend. While Bethany's athletic year in 2008 and 2009 took 10 months to play out, I will try to condense it into the month or so between now and the end of the countdown to fall sports. It won't always be fun, or easy to read; but then, neither was the season that took place for the Royal Blue and White teams scattered around northern Indiana. Chronological order I hope to maintain, as well as a little bit of what I was feeling, the sort of thing that was intentionally edited out of most of the posts during the year. The usual schedule will involve posting the next installment on Tuesday or Wednesday followed by Saturday or Sunday, but that may change if I need to catch up or take a break. (For example, there will likely be only one piece next week due to the Mennonite Church USA convention.)

With apologies to John Feinstein, Robert Montgomery Knight, et. al., this is The Season In A Blink.

I received two correct answers regarding the difference in last week's photos, one from Ryan Miller and the other from Cynthia Bontrager. The runner is wearing glasses in the first photo, but not in the second.

Menno Lands Memories: A 20th Anniversary Retrospective

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

On the evening of November 17, 1989, Bethany's boys basketball team hosted Westview in its traditional season-opening game. Though the Bruins had hosted the Warriors before, on seven different occasions in the previous 13 years, they had been at such places as Concord Junior High (three times), Syracuse Junior High, Goshen College, and even the home gym of their opponent in Topeka twice. But on this night, something was different. For the first time since February 10, 1967, Bethany hosted a boys basketball game; for the first time in the history of humankind, Bethany hosted a boys basketball game in its brand-new gym east of the school building.

Indiana isn't captivated by swimming between November and March, and Gene Hackman didn't coach a 1951 or 1954 wrestling team in a tiny gym in Knightstown. As the home of the Bruin basketball teams, the Menno Lands reaches its 20th anniversary as the center of the Bethany athletic universe this fall. To commemorate this anniversary, Bleeding Bruin Blue's Menno Lands Memories contest will attempt to determine, in order, the 20 most memorable moments in the gymnasium's history. Anyone may nominate events until September 15, 2009, when all nominated events will be ranked into the top 20 using a method yet to be determined. You may nominate as many or as few events as you like; prizes may be given for especially helpful contributions or in an attempt to ramp up support. The countdown will begin in October, with the Menno Lands' most memorable moment revealed on November 17.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Summer Series Schedule

Although the final putts have been holed, the lockers are empty, and the scoreboards are dark, the end of the 2008-09 school year does not mark the end of continuous posting for Bleeding Bruin Blue. To keep fresh Bruin blood (blue, of course) pumping through our veins, Bleeding Bruin Blue will continue to provide content until July 31 along the following schedule. Fall sports begin practice August 3, with previews following that week and the next.
  • Monday Minutiae
  • Tuesday/Wednesday: The Season In A Blink
  • Trivia Thursday
  • Photo Friday
  • Saturday/Sunday: The Season In A Blink
Today's regularly scheduled Monday Minutiae have been postponed to Wednesday to allow for a very special announcement later this week.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athletes of the Week, May 17-June 7

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

It would appear as though I have fallen behind in the announcing of Athletes of the Week. Delayed as they may have been, however, with technical problems, final exams, and several other things, the awards have been given as follows:
  • May 17-23: Emma Caskey
  • May 24-30: Johnny Kauffman
  • May 31-June 7: Seth Kauffman
Two trivia contests will be held this summer, one for the month of June and the other for the month of July, before the Athlete of the Week award resumes with the week of August 16-22.

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Lewis Caskey signed a national letter of intent this week to continue his soccer and academic careers at Goshen (Ind.) College, Bleeding Bruin Blue has learned. The Maple Leafs, coached by Thavisak Mounsithiraj, finished 9-8-2 in 2008 (5-2-1 in Mid-Central Conference play) and advanced to the NAIA national soccer tournament in 2007.

Caskey was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter in the Bruin backfield, where he was voted defensive MVP and co-captain in his senior year. He and one unsigned freshman will join three other Bethany graduates on Goshen's soccer team in 2009, including junior Martin Brubaker, who captained the school's only sectional championship team in 2006.

Caskey will join Hannah Grieser (volleyball), Luke Slagel (baseball), and Alita Yoder (cross country) along with three seniors who have not yet signed as Bethany graduates at Goshen in 2009-10, while Jodi Stutzman will continue her softball career at Hesston (Kan.) College, and several more athletes have not yet signed at various schools.
