Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, August 23-29

NOMINATE FOR MENNO LANDS MEMORIES or ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for August 23-29, tallying 95 assists in Bethany's four volleyball matches this week, is junior Mandy Schlabach.
Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: Schlabach and Emma Gerig are ineligible for August 30-September 5.

Next Week: Nominations will be due Sunday, Sept. 6, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. SeƱor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

Several changes and additions to this week's schedule, which I neglected to follow up on or check before I actually posted it over the weekend.
The boys tennis match Monday night is/was at Mishawaka, not Bethany.
Friday's boys soccer game with First Baptist will be either the JV or the "C" team, not both; we are still confirming which team will play.
Finally, Saturday's three-way volleyball match with Keystone and Hamilton will follow this schedule, as confirmed by the athletic department:

  • Bethany vs. Keystone, 9:00 a.m.
  • Keystone vs. Hamilton, 10:00 a.m.
  • Bethany vs. Hamilton, 11:00 a.m.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, 2009-10 Edition

NOMINATE FOR MENNO LANDS MEMORIES or ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

In conversing with a parent of one of our players this week, I realized that this has not been posted since last August. So, with minor changes, the 2009-10 edition of the Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week:
  • The BBB Athlete of the Week is the student-athlete who, throughout the previous week, demonstrated the most superior athletic performance (including objectives such as sportsmanship and fair play).
  • All Bruin athletic personnel eligible for high school letters (or middle schoolers in similar capacities) are eligible.
  • Performances will be evaluated based on the level at which they occurred (i.e. a middle school performance will be better than a statistically identical high school JV performance, in turn better than an identical varsity performance).
  • All performances, in all sports, in the week in question will be considered when giving the award. Participation on non-school teams shall not be taken into consideration.
  • Upon receiving the award, a player shall be ineligible for the next three (3) weeks. This rule shall not apply in state tournament series play.
  • Selection: Anyone may nominate an athlete by sending an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and putting “AOW nomination: [name]” in the subject line, replacing [name] with the nominee’s name. The body of the message may be used for whatever you want: making a case for selection, correcting my factual errors, stupid jokes, etc. The nomination period for a given week ends at 5:30 p.m. Sunday after the week ends. For example, nominations for the week of Sun., August 16 to Sat., August 22 will end on Sunday, August 23. From these nominations and his own, SeƱor Loco will choose the athlete of the week. THIS WILL NOT BE DECIDED SOLELY ON NUMBER OF NOMINATIONS RECEIVED.

One Soccer Game Broadcast, Four More Rained Out

NOMINATE FOR MENNO LANDS MEMORIES or ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

GOSHEN — Bleeding Bruin Blue has learned that Saturday's boys varsity soccer game between Wawasee and Bethany will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis over Michiana Sports Authority. The game will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m. EDT.
Though as I write this it is 74 degrees and sunny, Saturday's middle school Lakeland Christian Invitational has been canceled due to wet fields; Warsaw has absorbed 5.17 inches of rain this week, according to The Weather Channel's website. The Bruins, who have combined the boys and girls teams due to a lack of players in the latter program, will start their season at 5:30 on August 25 hosting Plymouth.
Site maintenence note: The "msso" label will be utilized for the 2009 season in place of the boys- and girls-specific labels.

Several updates to Thursday's schedule, which can also be seen on This Week In Bruindom (link below the fold on the right side):
The JV boys soccer game with Memorial has been postponed to a later date. According to coach Hank Willems, the change is due to an issue regarding the number of Memorial players with sufficient practice time. With this move, the varsity game will start at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
The JV girls soccer game at Hamilton has been postponed to September 3.
Both cross country teams will open their season at 5:00, running in the Goshen Invitational at Shanklin Park.
Rounding out the schedule, boys tennis hosts Goshen at 4:30 and volleyball travels to LaVille with the JV match at 6:00.

Composite Trivia Listing

NOMINATE FOR MENNO LANDS MEMORIES

The July trivia contest will end on Tuesday, August 11 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time. The winner gets two tickets to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle. To enter, send an e-mail to senorloco1908 (at) gmail (dot) com, with "trivia" in the subject line. (Feel free to look up the answers—it makes your score look better if you can find them.) The questions for July are as follows:

  • 1. In the event of a forfeited basketball game, what is the final score?
  • 2. Since their last World Series win in 1908, the Chicago Cubs have gained a reputation as lovable losers. But this has not always been the case. Who was president the last time the Cubs had a home game with attendance lower than the seating capacity of the Menno Lands? (Doubleheaders not included. Hint: The Menno Lands didn't exist, but Bethany did.)
  • 3. When Argos traveled to Bethany for the de facto Northern Indiana Soccer Conference boys championship game Oct. 6, 2007, what Bruin player had his head stepped on?
  • 4. Today is the day before Major League Baseball's all-star game, which means it is the day of the home run hitting contest. Who is Bethany's career leader in home runs (baseball or softball)?
  • 5. Against whom did Bethany play a quadruple-overtime boys basketball game? There are two possible correct answers; either one will work. (Hint: look below the "Bleeding Bruin Blue is on Facebook" ad on the right side.)
  • 6. Outside of two-time state participant Ali Hochstetler, who ran the fastest 5K time in 2008 for Bethany's cross country teams?
  • 7. Of the incoming senior class, two athletes played an IHSAA-sanctioned varsity sport in the winter of their freshman year (2006-07). Name them.

Although June's contest ended almost a month ago, here are that month's questions as well.

  • 1. Name the two players in Bethany baseball history with a batting average of .500 or better in a season (minimum 40 at bats).
  • 2. During the 2008-09 basketball season, Seth Kauffman dunked on four different occasions. Before Kauffman, who was the last Bruin to dunk in a game?
  • 3. Who has the most doubles in the history of Bethany's softball program?
  • 4. Who was the first coach of Bethany's boys tennis team?
  • 5. During the 1983-84 boys basketball season, one player made exactly 14 field goals in a game on three different occasions. Who was he?
  • 6. How many wins does volleyball coach Lois Mast need to become the all-time winningest coach in Bethany volleyball history (by number of wins, not percentage)?
  • 7. Since its inception last August, the Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week award has been given 39 times. What are the two surnames to receive the award in consecutive weeks?
Again, the e-mail address is senorloco1908 (at) gmail (dot) com, with "trivia" in the subject line.
