NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
JV baseball
GOSHEN — Opportunity, the saying goes, knocks but once. While the number, as well as the possibility of ringing the doorbell, may be up for debate in baseball, the premise remains true: take advantage of the chances available. Monday, it was the Crusaders doing that in an 18-2, five-inning victory over the Bruins at Bodiker Field.
Fort Wayne went down quietly in the first inning, as a walk erased four pitches later on a fielder's choice provided their only baserunner. Bethany started off auspiciously, as walks drawn by Peter Schrock and Jared Miller were followed by a single from Andy Slagel to load the bases with no outs. Such confidence would soon collapse, however, with two strikeouts and a ground ball leaving the bases full of Bruins. The Crusaders went down 1-2-3 in the ensuing half-inning and the game remained scoreless.
The second inning gave the home team their best shot at the scoreboard, and they responded by reaching base on three-ball counts with the first two hitters and advancing men to the corners with the third. Schrock knocked in a run with a sharp ground ball to center, and a single by Miller reloaded the bases. After Slagel took the payoff pitch for ball four, making the tally 2-0 for the home team, Bethany had a brilliant shot to hang a crooked number in the right field corner. But pitcher Kyle Miller nubbed a dribbler back to his mound counterpart, forcing the wiry, bespectacled shortstop out at home and getting thrown out at first to end the inning. The Crusaders scored without the benefit of a hit on offense—walk, stolen base, error, passed ball—and the Bruins went down quietly, leaving them up 2-1 entering the fourth.
In that inning, the visitors' opportunity knocked. It also rang the bell, stole the gate code, and finally broke through the door, as a walk, single and groundout gave way to ten of the next eleven hitters reaching base before Kyle ceded the rubber to Scott Weaver. All ten would eventually score, along with the two previous hitters, before a flyout got the home team out of the inning. Bethany would get only one hit in the fourth, then give up five runs on three hits, three walks, a wild pitch, and two passed balls in the fifth. Down 18-2, they would get one more crack at the bat before the ten-run rule dropped them to 0-1 on the year.
With leadoff walks from Slagel and Kyle Miller, a distant cousin of the aforementioned giver of chance may have been argued to be mounting the porch. Though Weaver fell victim to an aluminum-induced breeze on a 1-2 pitch, Blake Shetler's ground ball to second forced out Miller but put the Bruins a swing away from halving their gap to the mercy rule. But a dribbler in front of the plate from Josh Plank put the Bruins out of their misery until Thursday's 5:00 first pitch against Lakeland in LaGrange.

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for March 22-28 is Chelsea Noble. To know what Noble has done to win this honor, type her name into the search box at the top of the page (or click here). If you don't understand the award, feel free to comment (link at the bottom of the post) or e-mail me.
Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. Noble is the only winner since eligibilty reset for spring sports
Next Week: Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, April 5, at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. (This is the part where I check if you know what time that really is.) There will be a trivia contest April 5-12. The list of times by week is linked to on the right side and here. As I said several months ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. (You can even include the quotes if you want; a link that should do this is at the top of this post.) The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for March 15-21 is Christina Juroff. To know what Juroff has done to win this honor, type her name into the search box at the top of the page (or click here). If you don't understand the award, feel free to comment (link at the bottom of the post) or e-mail me.
Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The winter sports season has ended, so eligibility resets and everyone is eligible to win next week.
Next Week: Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, March 29, at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. NOMINATE FOR NEXT WEEK'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
When you have an athlete who scored 22 points per game in a week, set a school record for dunks in a game, and led his team to their first sectional title in seven years, that athlete is a pretty easy call for Athlete of the Week. Here's a hint as to who it is.

Still stumped? The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week is for Seth Kauffman. (Want an 8x10 print of this photo? Click here.)
Any Bruin athlete is eligible—everyone is eligible all the time during their team's state tournament play, so every person playing next week is eligible.
Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, March 15, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

As I said several months ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. (You can even include the quotes if you want; a link that should do this is at the top of this post.) The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
- A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
- Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
- Señor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — With those words it ended. With words it had started, an hour-plus before, preceded even earlier than that with a last-second shot in December. Though Casey Weaver thrust a dagger through the Bruins' hopes that Friday night in 2008, he could not recover that magic on the Saturday of Week 35. The game began, after a nearly two-minute rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" by the public-address announcer, inauspiciously for both teams. Though Bethany led 9-5 after the first stanza and 12-5 in the second quarter following a three-point goal from Seth Kauffman, the Panthers answered Kauffman's three and trailed by only two entering halftime.
The third quarter was not markedly different than the other two: Lakewood Park's zone slowed the Bruin offense, ekeing out nine points for the third consecutive quarter, and Bethany held the Panthers to only seven points in the first six minutes. The Bruins would crack, though, as layups by Brock Taulbee and Carson House brought the Panthers back to a 27-all tie in the 24th minute of play. Within two seconds of the period's end, however, the momentum began to shift: Chris Lampe picked up his fifth foul. The Panthers had used only six players to that point in the night, but continuous fouling left the Bruins in a position to seize control.
Seize control they did: Bethany took half of its fourth-quarter points from the charity stripe. The the field goals began to fall, too, as Lakewood Park abandoned its 2-3 zone to start the fourth quarter. Almost immediately, Mark DeLeeuw tipped in a Seth Kauffman attempt, followed by another Bruin bucket to stretch the lead to four. Tommy Strine answered with a three, only to be negated by four more BCHS points. After a Lakewood Park basket, Jordan Weaver led the offense through the Panthers' full-court press, and Seth Kauffman followed that with a steal-dunk combination that pushed Lakewood Park's Don Davis into calling a timeout. While I don't remember any other particular shots, the team in black went into panic mode offensively, and Bruin baskets on the ensuing possession stretched the lead to double digits. With 6.4 seconds to play, Carson House fouled Ben Bontreger, becoming the fourth player to be disqualified. Bontreger missed the first to the right, then sank the second. As the LPCS offense frantically pushed the ball up the floor, the horn sounded.
Seemingly just a piece of the scoreboard, the horn set off a celebration not seen in Bethany's ranks since 2002, reverberating from the blue sideline fronting the bleachers up through row L and the gym's cinder block walls. After the teams shook hands, the fans were invited to the floor to take photographs and meet the team. At least a hundred did so. (The results of Bleeding Bruin Blue's foray to the hardwood can be seen here.) As the Bruins cut down the net that had seen only five second-half field goals from Lakewood Park, their next mission became clear: next Saturday, 10:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Eastern, against Triton and Bowman Academy, in Bourbon, Indiana. Stay tuned to Bleeding Bruin Blue's Tournament Central for more information.

NOMINATE FOR NEXT WEEK'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for February 22-28 is Mikey Kelly. To know what Kelly has done to win this honor (like tying a school record for three-point percentage), type his name into the search box at the top of the page (or click here). If you don't understand the award, feel free to comment (link at the bottom of the post) or e-mail me.
Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are the winners from the last three weeks: Kelly, Mark DeLeeuw, and Jenae Rupp. As three weeks have elapsed since Seth Kauffman's win on February 8, he becomes eligible next week.
Next Week: Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, March 8, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

- A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
- Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
- Señor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.
