Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: Preview

As we get into the fall sports seasons (school's out for the day, first matches in 90 minutes +/-), I'm going to institute a new feature:

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week

The rules:
  • The BBB Athlete of the Week is the student-athlete who, throughout the previous week, demonstrated the most superior athletic performance (including objectives such as sportsmanship and fair play).
  • The week shall run from Monday to Saturday: IHSAA rules prohibit school athletic events on Sunday.
  • All Bruin athletic personnel eligible for high school letters (or middle schoolers in similar capacities) are eligible.
  • Performances will be evaluated based on the level at which they occurred (i.e. a middle school performance will be better than a statistically identical high school JV performance, in turn better than an identical varsity performance).
  • All performances, in all sports, in the week in question will be considered when giving the award. Participation on non-school teams shall not be taken into consideration.
  • Upon receiving the award, a player shall be ineligible for the next four (4) weeks.
  • Eligibility shall reset when the player’s team enters state tournament series play. Multi-sport athletes will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Selection: Anyone may nominate an athlete by sending an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and putting “AOW nomination: [name]” in the subject line, replacing [name] with the nominee’s name. The body of the message may be used for whatever you want: making a case for selection, correcting my factual errors, stupid jokes, etc. The nomination period for a given week ends at varying times Sunday after the week ends. For example, nominations for the week of Mon., August 18 to Sat., August 23 will end on Sunday, August 24. (CLICK HERE to see times by week.) From these nominations and his own, SeƱor Loco will choose the athlete of the week. THIS WILL NOT BE DECIDED SOLELY ON NUMBER OF NOMINATIONS RECEIVED.

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Boys basketball
GOSHEN — Bethany entered Friday night's contest on a roll, having won their last three games and nearly knocking off the second-ranked team in class 1A before that. The statewide Sagarin ratings favored them by 11.5 points over visiting Argos. The Bruins averaged 58 points per game to their opponents' 45, giving up 46 points per game as opposed to 50. The numbers seemed to be in their favor.
But on this night, it was a different set of numbers that would matter. Six-foot, three-inch senior Scott Sanders led the way for Argos, going 13-for-15 from the free throw line, as Argos shot 21 foul shots to Bethany's two en route to a 41-31 victory. Sanders was aided in his performance by the four fouls called on Bruin big men Hamilton Thorne and Seth Kauffman, the former receiving his fourth with 4:24 to play in the third quarter.
Sanders added one field goal to the mix, finishing with 15 points; fellow senior Jeremy Weirick finished with 14.
Senior Seth Kauffman led the Bruins with twelve points, while Mikey Kelly hit the team's only two three-pointers and finished with eight. Kauffman also grabbed five rebounds, one short of sopohmore Andrew Slagel for the team lead.

Boys tennis
GOSHEN — Bethany played a match against Northridge that was identical to last year, score-wise, but a far cry from the 0-5 drubbings of years past. Coach Matt Miller had a much better grip on what was going on, him being the coach and everything, and he summed it up pretty wellhere. Even so, there are still a few things I'd like to add.

I didn't see much of #1 doubles (Jared Schwartzentruber/Jeremy Thomas) and #2 singles (Jonny Shenk). I had been intrigued by Ben Mast's match at 3 singles upon arriving and by the time I pulled himself away from his match, #2 doubles team Daniel Buschert/Seth Krabill had taken the first set 6-1. From glancing at 1 dubs and 2 singles, however, it was fairly clear that they were totally outclassed. Ben looked to be gong the same way, losing the first set 0-6, and Luke Hostetter was playing many of his trademark iiiinnncccrrreeedddiiibbblllyyy lllooonnnggg pppoooiiinnntttsss in falling behind 0-3.

(Both doubles matches and #2 singles continued on the same track throughout—I’m going to focus on the other two.)

Luke would go on to drop the first set 0-6. As Matt said at one point during that match, “Luke is playing long points [understatement of year so far?], which is to his advantage. He’s just not finishing them.” Seeing some closure to that debacle, I went back over to Court 5, where I expected Ben to be finishing up his first-ever varsity match in a manner just short of a double-bagel, uniform-fueled bonfire. I was in for the surprise of my life.

Ben was still fully clothed (hallelujah) and up 3-1 in the second set. Through the first set, it was obvious that he was getting to the ball comfortably; the problem was that he wasn’t hitting it very well. That, needless to say, had changed. He would tighten up a little bit, but hang on to a break and took the second set 6-4.

Thankfully (to me), high school tennis is equipped with a ten-minute break between the second and third set, allowing me to return to court 1, watch a game of Luke’s match (now down 3-1 in set two) and figure out where to go from there. Luke would try to mount a comeback, pulling to within 4-3 at one point, but ultimately fall short 0-6, 3-6 in a valiant second-set effort, giving Northridge three matches and a win. As the unofficial official score reporter between Courts 1 and 5, I broke this news to KP, the Mast clan, and several assorted Bruin supporters gathered nearby, and settled in to watch Ben hang on to pull the match out 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. The scoreline makes the match look like it was close; in truth, Ben looked like he had in his grasp for basically the last set and a half.

While this was going on, Russell Klassen was beating up on an opponent much larger than he, winning 8-2; Mikey Kelly was trying to play lefthanded...he didn’t do so well, losing 8-5; and Matthew Amstutz was playing a very streaky match, going up 2-1, falling to 4-3, and holding serve in the fourteenth game to win 8-6. With Jake Gerig/Blake Shetler up 5-0 and Austin Loucks/Kyle Miller up 4-3, it looked like we were in position to take the JV match easily. Jake and Blake lost control of the Raider serves, but held their own and won 8-3. Austin and Kyle didn’t fare as well, losing 5-8.

This put us up 3-2 in JV play; freshmen Matt Ebersole’s and Evan Grimes’ singles matches were the only two points remaining. Matt was up 5-0 on an opponent with severe shin splints, and Evan was losing 0-4 to someone else. The matches would finish virtually simultaneously, with Matt winning 8-4, and Evan losing 3-8. This finally brought an end to BC-Northridge, roughly three hours after it started.

Northridge 3, Bethany 2. JV: Bethany 4, Northridge 3.
Luke Hostetter lost to Jeff George 0-6, 3-6. Jonny Shenk lost to Nick Myers 1-6, 0-6. Ben Mast def. Dylan Pieri 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Jared Schwartzentruber/Jeremy Thomas lost to James Brandenburger/Blake Lukin 1-6, 4-6. Daniel Buschert/Seth Krabill def. Colin Chocola/Jeremy Runge 6-1, 6-0.
JV: Matthew Amstutz def. Cole Wogoman 8-6. Mikey Kelly lost to Tim Eash 5-8. Russell Klassen def. Dylan Wengerd 8-2. Matt Ebersole def. Connor Cameran 8-4. Evan Grimes lost to Jared Gietzen 3-8. Austin Loucks/Kyle Miller lost to Tim Wagner/Collin Roberts 5-8. Jake Gerig/Blake Shetler def. AJ Thielking/Doug Jakubowicz 8-2.

Quote of the Day: “Why are you complaining about playing bad lefthanded? You’re not lefthanded!” –Coach Matt Miller pointing out the obvious (twice: he’s complaining and he’s not lefthanded) to #2 JV singles player Mikey Kelly.

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Baseball vs. Fairfield

It started late. It looked like it would end disappointingly quickly. But it did not: a last-ditch comeback for the ages transformed blowout to nail-biter to victory Friday night at Bodiker Fields.

While the game's start time was pushed back to 5:04 to counter Fairfield's bus issues, the 42-degree temperature would not stop the visitors from scoring on an error by Bruin shortstop Mikey Kelly and a single from left fielder Colin Holmes. Bethany struck back with the aid of two wild pitches in the bottom of the first, only to surrender four more in the top of the second after two were out. A James Helmuth single plated a run with no outs in the second, but Helmuth was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double and the remaining two hitters went down quietly.

The fourth inning saw the Falcons score following a walk and stolen base by Justin Scott. Kyle Cross followed with a ground ball to third baseman Johnny Kauffman, who looked the runner back to second and recorded the out at first. In an attempt to record an unconventional 5-3-6 double play, first baseman Luke Slagel threw wildly into the fence behind third and Scott scampered home with an insurance run to make the tally 6-2.

Fairfield would finish their scoring after two strikeouts in the fifth, as a Jordan Bontrager double was followed by a wild pitch from Bruin starter Seth Kauffman and three consecutive errors by second baseman Russell Klassen, and the Falcons would sustain their advantage for another inning to lead 9-2 through 5½.

In the sixth inning, Seth Kauffman reached second base on an error by Cross off the second pitch of the inning, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Johnny Kauffman, who had replaced Seth on the mound prior to the previous half-inning, knocked a 3-2 pitch into center field and set the visitors down with 16 pitches in the seventh, sending Bethany into its final cuts down by only six.

The Falcons replaced Derick Troeger with Hochstetler to begin the frame, and he would find the strike zone just five times to the next four hitters, leaving men on the corners and one away to the relief abilities of Justin Scott. He started auspiciously, leaving Seth Kauffman waving at a 1-2 pitch, then induced Johnny Kauffman to roll a 3-1 pitch straight to second baseman Brad Newcomer for a routine third out.

But the ball split Newcomer's legs, scoring Tim Gautsche from third and Mikey Kelly from second, and a walk drawn by Russell Klassen put the tying run at bat in the person of Ben Bontreger. The 5-7 center fielder drove a ball into the right field gap for two bases, plating Kauffman and leaving Klassen at third. Each runner advanced a base on an 0-1 wild pitch from Scott, leaving the score 9-8 in favor of Fairfield. After an awkward swinging strike, James Helmuth singled on a line drive over second, bringing in the tying run and setting the stage for an inevitable conclusion.

Two pitches later it came, after a ball and a strike to first baseman Micah Miller. The left-handed, high-socked first baseman lifted Scott's offering into a 25-mile-per-hour, left to right cross wind. The ball fell behind outfielders Troeger and Josh Brown, bounced once off the chain-link fence, scoring a nearly sprinting Helmuth all the way from first and sending home a rather sparse Spring Break crowd on their feet.

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Baseball
GOSHEN — The Bruins held on for a wild 19-18 victory over the Fort Wayne Crusaders Saturday afternoon as the rain held off at Bodiker Field. After a first inning that saw 12 runs and 13 hits, chasing both starting pitchers, each team scored twice in the second while Bethany repeated the feat in the third. The Crusaders fought back with three runs on four hits and a throwing error in their half of the fourth inning, but Bethany scored six in their turn behind two consecutive errors and a two-run triple from Seth Kauffman. Both teams saw four straight batters reach base in the sixth inning, each scoring three times.
With the score 19-14 after five innings, Adam Wilson and Braden Arnold led off with two straight walks for the visitors. Jordan Arnold hit into a force play with Wilson out at third before Adam Schmitz lifted an 0-2 pitch from re-entered starter Mikey Kelly into a routine fly ball to right field. Attempting a one-handed catch, the usually-reliable James Helmuth dropped the ball, allowing Braden Arnold to score, while Jordan Arnold advanced to third base and the batter reached second. Nate Hinsky lined the next pitch off the left field batter's-eye fence, scoring both Arnold, and a groundout later, Luke Klimek singled to score Hinsky.
The Bruins escaped the sixth on a weak ground ball, but could manage no more in the bottom of the inning than a one-out walk by Russell Klassen. Seth Kauffman moved from shortstop to pitch in the seventh for the save opportunity and induced a groundout to the first man he saw. Wilson hit a double over the head of center fielder Ben Bontreger, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in the person of Josh Jennings. Jennings lined out to right on the first pitch, and Wilson trotted over to third base as the ball was returned to the pitcher. But he went to the coach's box to discuss strategy without first calling for time. After much protestation from the Bruins and conference by the umpires, Wilson was ruled out for leaving the baseline and the Bruins prevailed victoriously in two hours and 51 minutes.

Memorable Moments #15-#12

#15. April 26: Kelly hits for the cycle
Soon after 6:00 on a 64-degree Monday afternoon, Mikey Kelly stepped to the plate at Bodiker Field and lined the first pitch he saw to center field for a triple. After scoring on a single by James Helmuth, Kelly singled on the second pitch of his next at bat in the following inning and scored again. While the scoring accounted for two runs of Bethany’s 6-0 lead after three frames, the most significant score would be in the fifth. Leading off, Kelly lined a 1-1 pitch from Ryan Seller down the right field foul line for his first home run of the season. In the fifth, he would make the most of his final at bat by ripping a ball into the left-center field gap and stopping at second base with a double. Having recorded all four types of hits in the same game, Kelly turned an otherwise uneventful Monday night game into what is believed to be the first cycle in school history in a 14-4 victory over Valparaiso Victory Christian.
#14. October 3: Boys soccer takes conference title
Playing on their rain-soaked home turf at Bodiker Field, Jesse Ramer and Femi Hollinger-Janzen combined to slip three goals in six minutes past Argos goalkeeper Dylan Colburn. Seth Kauffman added another tally after halftime, and the Bruins held Argos scoreless and claimed their third consecutive Northern Indiana Soccer Conference title with a 4-0 defeat. Argos was runner-up for the third time in six years.
#13. May 22: Softball comes back against ECA
After an inning and a half of the Goshen Invitational consolation game, things were not looking up for the softball team. They mustered one hit in falling 16-0 to the hosts in the first round and trailed Elkhart Christian 5-0. To make matters worse, ECA was the team’s first-round sectional opponent just three days later. Bethany plated single runs in the second and third innings to cut the gap to 5-2. It was then that the floodgates opened, with a seven-run fourth giving way to three and four runs in the next two innings before the game was called in the sixth due to the ten-run mercy rule with the score 16-6 in favor of Bethany. Lauren Hooley finished with three hits and five RBI to lead the Bruins, while Mattie Lehman scattered two hits among six innings on the mound.
#12. December 19: Bruins win holiday tournaments
Low-scoring games and aggressive defense were hallmarks of the final games of the 2009 Bethany Christian Tournament. The girls used none of their usual offensive weapons, as Marla zumFelde missed five of six 3-point attempts and the team was an anemic 5-for-18 from the free throw line. Bethany entered the day with a 13-player roster combining JV and varsity, a shorthandedness that was compounded by a knee injury in the first game that ended one season; in the second quarter, a collision while diving for a loose ball would force the Bruins to play without starter Chris Minter. But trailing 31-25 entering the final quarter, the team outscored Elkhart Christian 15-8 as Eagle forward Natalie Allen sat with four fouls and then fouled out with nearly two minutes remaining; in her absence, the Eagles fell 40-39. Bethany finished with 11 points from zumFelde, nine from Ali Hochstetler and eight from Mandy Schlabach; Natalie Thorne had six to go with nine rebounds.
If the girls’ 40 points seemed low, the boys’ 37 could not be a good thing. But unlike the girls, the boys held Elkhart Christian to only eleven points in a first half that saw Bethany’s Jesse Ramer and ECA’s Sean Addison receive technical fouls on separate incidents from referee Darrell Watson. Addison would leave partway through the second half with an apparent injury. Bruin forwards Seth Kauffman and Hamilton Thorne finished with a combined 22 points and 23 rebounds, anchoring the interior of a defense that held the Eagles to 10 field goals and drew 20 fouls. Bethany’s offense operated from the interior as well, with no three-point shots and only three field goals from shooters smaller than 6’0”. But it was enough for a 37-28 win.
Coming tomorrow: We twist and bend our way through three nail-biting victories, as well as a fourth that wasn’t so close.

Boys basketball

BAUGO TWP., Ind. — James Helmuth drained a three-point goal from the right corner with 5.1 seconds to play, and Shane Cook's off-balance 30-footer was no good at the buzzer as Bethany escaped Jimtown with a 30-28 victory Tuesday night.
Seth Kauffman made a layup with 1:45 left in the third quarter for his 1,000th and 1,001st career points. He finished the game with 1,003, 143 points short of Eliot Friesen's school records. Bethany missed its first five shots and did not score until Hamilton Thorne punched in a bucket with 6:42 left in the second period. But the host Jimmies wold hit an even longer cold streak, as Brian Hosinski ended an 11-0 Bethany run that stretched for 13 minutes across the entire second quarter. Hosinski finished with six points, while Bret Giddings led Jimtown with nine on 3-of-4 shooting.
Jimtown outscored Bethany 17-7 in the third quarter and led 28-22 after a long-range shot from Shane Cook with 3:37 remaining. Ben Bontreger sank a pair of free throws at 2:50 before Helmuth cut the lead to one with a minute and 54 seconds left in the game. Bethany resorted to fouling in an attempt to get the ball back, and Femi Hollinger-Janzen picked up his second with just over 25 seconds on the clock. But Helmuth intercepted the inbound pass with only a slight bobble before receiving the outlet pass for the game-winning shot. After a series of timeouts, Jimtown took the ball out of bounds just inside midcourt with 2.2 seconds left, and the rest is history.
Tuesday's game marked the lowest point total in any of Bethany's 440 wins dating back to 1965. The Bruins are 10-7 and will ride a six-game winning streak into Saturday's contest against LaVille at the Menno Lands. Jimtown falls to 9-9, 3-3 in the Northern State Conference
