Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week, January 24-30

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for January 24-30 scored a season-high 13 points and hit 5-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's game at Hamilton, then added a pair of three-point shots against Fort Wayne Blackhawk. For those of you not interested in checking the box scores from those dates, the winner is senior Mikey Kelly.

Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts thereof are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: therefore, Kelly, Seth Kauffman, and Marla zumFelde are ineligible for the January 31-February 6 award; however, zumFelde is not subject to this rule as her team will begin sectional play this week.
Next Week: The next AOW will be named sometime after Sunday, Jan. 31, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time; athletes can be nominated until the decision is made. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" in the subject line. The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural)]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. SeƱor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

Kehr Named Hesston Women's Soccer Coach

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

HESSTON, Kan. — Hesston College on Monday named Bethany athletic director Bryan Kehr as their new women's soccer coach for the 2010 season. Kehr's coaching duties will not begin until August, although he will soon assume the duties of recruiting and signing athletes. He will remain at Bethany for the balance of the 2009-2010 academic year before his resignation takes effect in June.

The Larks compete in Region 6 of the National Junior College Athletic Association, where they went 2-8-1 in 2009 as part of a 2-15-1 season that saw them score 13 goals while surrendering 115. They were coached most recently by Kurt Hostetler, who returned to his alma mater in 2007 as men's and women's soccer coach. Hostetler remains as coach of the men's program.

Schedule Update

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

GOSHEN — Senior Loco will be on seƱor trip in Tennessee this week, or something like that. Because of that, Bleeding Bruin Blue will likely not be featuring any new content until I return Friday night. There are no high school games scheduled until Saturday; the middle school teams play six games in the intervening time period.

As great as this service may be, the best way to experience a game is still to watch it in person. Go ahead and make the trek down to the Menno Lands complex. I'm sure Bethany will appreciate your support.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athletes of the Week, December 20-26 and January 3-9

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Here are the Bleeding Bruin Blue Athletes of the Week for December 20-26 and January 3-9:
  • December 20-26: Twila Albrecht
  • January 3-9: Hamilton Thorne
Eligibility: Literally all Bruins in a position to win any athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, or middle school counterparts thereof are eligible. The only exceptions are recent winners: therefore, Albrecht and Thorne, along with the non-existent winner from the intervening week when Bethany did not play, are ineligible for the January 10-16 award.

Next Week: The next AOW will be named sometime after Sunday, Jan. 17, at 5:30 p.m.

NOMINATE FOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Boys basketball
GOSHEN — Bethany entered Friday night's contest on a roll, having won their last three games and nearly knocking off the second-ranked team in class 1A before that. The statewide Sagarin ratings favored them by 11.5 points over visiting Argos. The Bruins averaged 58 points per game to their opponents' 45, giving up 46 points per game as opposed to 50. The numbers seemed to be in their favor.
But on this night, it was a different set of numbers that would matter. Six-foot, three-inch senior Scott Sanders led the way for Argos, going 13-for-15 from the free throw line, as Argos shot 21 foul shots to Bethany's two en route to a 41-31 victory. Sanders was aided in his performance by the four fouls called on Bruin big men Hamilton Thorne and Seth Kauffman, the former receiving his fourth with 4:24 to play in the third quarter.
Sanders added one field goal to the mix, finishing with 15 points; fellow senior Jeremy Weirick finished with 14.
Senior Seth Kauffman led the Bruins with twelve points, while Mikey Kelly hit the team's only two three-pointers and finished with eight. Kauffman also grabbed five rebounds, one short of sopohmore Andrew Slagel for the team lead.
