Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: September 21-27

Our varsity boys tennis team went 3-0 in dual matches this week and was undefeated in the Fort Wayne Wayne Redundant Invitational. This means that each position played 5 matches. We had a total of five people go 5-0, and exactly one of them happened to get nominated. For this reason, the Athlete of the Week honor for the last full week of September goes to Daniel Buschert.

Eligibility: As four weeks have elapsed since her AOW win on August 30, junior Kelly Snyder becomes eligible again next week. Literally all Bruins in a position to win any high school athletic letter (varsity, JV or freshman) during the current season, and their middle school counterparts, are eligible. The only exceptions are winners from the last four weeks: Buschert, senior Hannah Grieser, senior Jordan Weaver, and eighth grader Matt Greenlee.

Next Week: Next week's nominations will be due Sunday, October 5, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. This is subject to change, and I will announce as soon as I know if it will. As I said several weeks ago, the first person to correctly name how I determined the times will get mentioned in a future post. To nominate someone, send an e-mail to senorloco1908@gmail.com and put "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural]" in the subject line. (You can even include the quotes if you want.) The body of the message can be used for whatever you want. The three simple things that will disqualify a message are:
  1. A subject line that reads "AOW nomination: [name of athlete ('athlete' is singular, not plural]" without actually naming an athlete.
  2. Anyone nominating multiple people will have only the last nomination counted.
  3. SeƱor Loco reserves the right to ignore e-mails with unnecessarily vulgar sections.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: September 14-20

This is probably the toughest decision I've had to make for Athlete of the Week. Not quite as tough as seeing Yankee Stadium close on ESPN, behind me, but tough nonetheless. Someone was nominated multiple times, including twice in about 15 seconds, but missed out. As I've commented a couple of times, the 14-5 volleyball team could have won "Team of the Week," but this award is individual. This week's winner came from said volleyball team, accumulating 9 blocks, 40 kills and 5 kills, and that was only what was reported. But the clinching honor was found only after a 2-2 finish in Saturday's Wawasee Invitational, when the recipient being named to the All-Tournament Team provided a way to get around my lack of knowledge regarding what constitutes a good volleyball game.

You can stop reading here and check Saturday's report for the winner (Bethany's representative on the All-Tournament Team is in bold) or keep reading to find it.

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week for September 14-20 is senior Hannah Grieser.

REMINDER: Next week's nomination deadline is 5:30 p.m. Eastern time. As four weeks have elapsed since his Athlete of the Week win, sophomore Ben Mast will be eligible for next week's award. Remaining ineligible are Grieser, senior Jordan Weaver, eighth grader Matt Greenlee, and junior Kelly Snyder.

Match Report Update

Match reports from 9/8 and 9/9 coming 9/10. I've been having some technical issues and other responsibilities that have kept me from getting the information where I'd like it.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: September 1-6

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week this week comes from an unlikely source. It was sort of an off week for the high school teams: boys and girls cross country didn't run, girls soccer didn't play, and boys soccer had a forgettable weekend in Fort Wayne. The boys tennis team and volleyball team both had their usual, stellar team week with no real individual standouts. As you can see, the AOW pickings were not looking particularly great.
Because of this, Bleeding Bruin Blue was forced to turn to a different place: the middle school. To quote his nomination: "I'll put in a nomination in this process for [player's name here...wait for it]. He scored three goals in the middle school soccer game and apparently played very well." With a total of four goals in three games, the Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the week is Matt Greenlee.

Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week: September 1-6

The Bleeding Bruin Blue Athlete of the Week will be announced on Monday, September 7. The deadline for nominations will be 3:25 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

Folks, while the Athlete of the Week designation is my final decision, it's much easier to concur than to make a final decision. Every (both) AOW that has been named this year has been met with dissatisfaction, either from people who wanted someone else to win the award or from someone who wanted a large patch on their locker. The problem is that no one has nominated anybody: the best athlete of the Bruin community is not being picked by the Bruin community, but one person at a computer late Sunday night.

The Blogspot server won't let me make this any bigger:
